Dutch politics remain in flux, especially in the margins.
It seems Baudet has won the power struggle within the FvD; or rather, his opponents have given up and left the party. Still, the party is down 5 seats (from 8 to 3) in the single poll that was run wholly after the debacle.
The latest from the meltdown of Forum voor Democratie, which is Dutch for “the gift that keeps on giving.”
Yesterday Thierry Baudet resigned as FvD party leader. What’s going on, why did he resign, and what will happen now?
There will be general elections next March, and the dozen-plus-a-few Dutch parties are preparing for them. It’s time for another series of party profiles. We’ll go in order from small to large according to the August 2020 polls.
Today we’ll continue with alt-right-ish FvD, which is becoming Wilders’s most serious electoral competitor. This will be the longest 2020 profile because FvD is the most important new party vying in the upcoming elections.
Four weeks ago, on 6 May, it was fifteen years ago that Pim Fortuyn, the communist-turned-catholic, openly gay, flamboyant and luxury-loving elite newbie politician who essentially invented right-wing populism, was murdered a week before the 2002 elections. (His party went on to win 26 seats, but quickly fell apart without the leadership Fortuyn himself was supposed to bring. Wilders picked up the pieces in 2006.)
The formation discussions are continuing slowly. Nobody expects to have anything to say for the next few weeks, and at the request of Klaver (GL) Fridays are non-negotiation days so he can spend time with his small children. I’m not sure how much the other parties like this, but they have agreed to it. Everybody is in let’s-take-this-easy mode.
Meanwhile, some snippets that might be of interest:
Since Dutch politics are boring and predictable right now, let’s also take a look at some other occurrences.
This is the political blog of Peter-Paul Koch, mobile platform strategist, consultant, and trainer, in Amsterdam. It’s a hobby blog where he follows Dutch politics for the benefit of those twelve foreigners that are interested in such matters, as well as his Dutch readers.
If you like this blog, why not donate a little bit of money to help me pay my bills?
